Aside from its fishing history, New Bedford takes pride in its nickname, "The Whaling City."  In the early 18th century, whaling merchants migrated to the waterfront destination. The early Bedford Village quickly became a commercial zone and from there became a major whaling and foreign trade port.  Entrepreneurship and the demand for whale oil brought great wealth to the city.  By the mid 1800s, New Bedford had become the most powerful city in the whaling industry.
